What Did Jesus Say About Covetousness

Jesus taught that our lives do not really consist of having an abundance of things or possessions.  We might assess what things in our lives we really need to be happy.  The newest fashionable jacket?  A flawless carpet?  The most prestigious position within our workplace?  None of these things are eternal.  None of these things can really bring us closer to God.  At most, we can feel some fleeting sense of satisfaction that will certainly diminish.

Some of the wealthiest and prestigious people have come to the same conclusion:  money cannot buy happiness and can’t buy love.  Some in the field of science have concluded that material things do not provide any lasting happiness.  Next time we find ourselves wanting something, maybe we can concentrate on thoughts of contentment.

Luke 12:15  And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Pro 28:16 …he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.

My Prayer

God,  Please help me not to be jealous.  Help me to overcome greed.  I want to walk in the path of giving rather than wanting.  To help me battle covetous feelings, please fill me with contentment, peace, patience, temperance, assurance, trust, holiness (desiring Godly thoughts), and help me to not allow covetousness to reside within my mind.  Amen
